Eric Blake 8417e1378c qemu-img: Make unallocated part of backing chain obvious in map
The recently-added NBD context qemu:allocation-depth is able to
distinguish between locally-present data (even when that data is
sparse) [shown as depth 1 over NBD], and data that could not be found
anywhere in the backing chain [shown as depth 0]; and the libnbd
project was recently patched to give the human-readable name "absent"
to an allocation-depth of 0. But qemu-img map --output=json predates
that addition, and has the unfortunate behavior that all portions of
the backing chain that resolve without finding a hit in any backing
layer report the same depth as the final backing layer. This makes it
harder to reconstruct a qcow2 backing chain using just 'qemu-img map'
output, especially when using "backing":null to artificially limit a
backing chain, because it is impossible to distinguish between a
QCOW2_CLUSTER_UNALLOCATED (which defers to a [missing] backing file)
and a QCOW2_CLUSTER_ZERO_PLAIN cluster (which would override any
backing file), since both types of clusters otherwise show as
"data":false,"zero":true" (but note that we can distinguish a
QCOW2_CLUSTER_ZERO_ALLOCATED, which would also have an "offset":
listing).

The task of reconstructing a qcow2 chain was made harder in commit
0da9856851 (nbd: server: Report holes for raw images), because prior
to that point, it was possible to abuse NBD's block status command to
see which portions of a qcow2 file resulted in BDRV_BLOCK_ALLOCATED
(showing up as NBD_STATE_ZERO in isolation) vs. missing from the chain
(showing up as NBD_STATE_ZERO|NBD_STATE_HOLE); but now qemu reports
more accurate sparseness information over NBD.

An obvious solution is to make 'qemu-img map --output=json' add an
additional "present":false designation to any cluster lacking an
allocation anywhere in the chain, without any change to the "depth"
parameter to avoid breaking existing clients. The iotests have
several examples where this distinction demonstrates the additional
accuracy.

Peter Maydell fc32b91a88 ppc patch queue 2021-07-09
Here's a (probably) final pull request before the qemu-6.1 soft
 freeze. Includes:
   * Implementation of the new H_RPT_INVALIDATE hypercall
   * Virtual Open Firmware for pSeries and pegasos2 machine types.
This is an experimental minimal Open Firmware implementation which
works by delegating nearly everything to qemu itself via a special
     hypercall.
   * A number of cleanups to the ppc soft MMU code
   * Fix to handling of two-level radix mode translations for the
     powernv machine type
   * Update the H_GET_CPU_CHARACTERISTICS call with newly defined bits.
This will allow more flexible handling of possible future CPU
     Spectre-like flaws
   * Correctly treat mtmsrd as an illegal instruction on BookE cpus
   * Firmware update for the ppce500 machine type

ppc patch queue 2021-07-09

Max Reitz 8fc54f9428 export/fuse: Add allow-other option
Without the allow_other mount option, no user (not even root) but the
one who started qemu/the storage daemon can access the export. Allow
users to configure the export such that such accesses are possible.

While allow_other is probably what users want, we cannot make it an
unconditional default, because passing it is only possible (for non-root
users) if the global fuse.conf configuration file allows it. Thus, the
default is an 'auto' mode, in which we first try with allow_other, and
then fall back to without.

FuseExport.allow_other reports whether allow_other was actually used as
a mount option or not. Currently, this information is not used, but a
future patch will let this field decide whether e.g. an export's UID and
GID can be changed through chmod.

One notable thing about 'auto' mode is that libfuse may print error
messages directly to stderr, and so may fusermount (which it executes).
Our export code cannot really filter or hide them. Therefore, if 'auto'
fails its first attempt and has to fall back, fusermount will print an
error message that mounting with allow_other failed.

This behavior necessitates a change to iotest 308, namely we need to
filter out this error message (because if the first attempt at mounting
with allow_other succeeds, there will be no such message).

Furthermore, common.rc's _make_test_img should use allow-other=off for
FUSE exports, because iotests generally do not need to access images
from other users, so allow-other=on or allow-other=auto have no
advantage. OTOH, allow-other=on will not work on systems where
user_allow_other is disabled, and with allow-other=auto, we get said
error message that we would need to filter out again. Just disabling
allow-other is simplest.

Max Reitz 2c7dd057aa export/fuse: Pass default_permissions for mount
We do not do any permission checks in fuse_open(), so let the kernel do
them. We already let fuse_getattr() report the proper UNIX permissions,
so this should work the way we want.

This causes a change in 308's reference output, because now opening a
non-writable export with O_RDWR fails already, instead of only actually
attempting to write to it. (That is an improvement.)

Alexey Kardashevskiy fc8c745d50 spapr: Implement Open Firmware client interface
The PAPR platform describes an OS environment that's presented by
a combination of a hypervisor and firmware. The features it specifies
require collaboration between the firmware and the hypervisor.

Since the beginning, the runtime component of the firmware (RTAS) has
been implemented as a 20 byte shim which simply forwards it to
a hypercall implemented in qemu. The boot time firmware component is
SLOF - but a build that's specific to qemu, and has always needed to be
updated in sync with it. Even though we've managed to limit the amount
of runtime communication we need between qemu and SLOF, there's some,
and it has become increasingly awkward to handle as we've implemented
new features.

This implements a boot time OF client interface (CI) which is
enabled by a new "x-vof" pseries machine option (stands for "Virtual Open
Firmware). When enabled, QEMU implements the custom H_OF_CLIENT hcall
which implements Open Firmware Client Interface (OF CI). This allows
using a smaller stateless firmware which does not have to manage
the device tree.

The new "vof.bin" firmware image is included with source code under
pc-bios/. It also includes RTAS blob.

This implements a handful of CI methods just to get -kernel/-initrd
working. In particular, this implements the device tree fetching and
simple memory allocator - "claim" (an OF CI memory allocator) and updates
"/memory@0/available" to report the client about available memory.

This implements changing some device tree properties which we know how
to deal with, the rest is ignored. To allow changes, this skips
fdt_pack() when x-vof=on as not packing the blob leaves some room for
appending.

In absence of SLOF, this assigns phandles to device tree nodes to make
device tree traversing work.

When x-vof=on, this adds "/chosen" every time QEMU (re)builds a tree.

This adds basic instances support which are managed by a hash map
ihandle -> [phandle].

Before the guest started, the used memory is:
0..e60 - the initial firmware
8000..10000 - stack
400000.. - kernel
3ea0000.. - initramdisk

This OF CI does not implement "interpret".

Unlike SLOF, this does not format uninitialized nvram. Instead, this
includes a disk image with pre-formatted nvram.

With this basic support, this can only boot into kernel directly.
However this is just enough for the petitboot kernel and initradmdisk to
boot from any possible source. Note this requires reasonably recent guest
kernel with:
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=df5be5be8735

The immediate benefit is much faster booting time which especially
crucial with fully emulated early CPU bring up environments. Also this
may come handy when/if GRUB-in-the-userspace sees light of the day.

This separates VOF and sPAPR in a hope that VOF bits may be reused by
other POWERPC boards which do not support pSeries.

This assumes potential support for booting from QEMU backends
such as blockdev or netdev without devices/drivers used.

Paolo Bonzini fe68090e8f machine: add smp compound property
Make -smp syntactic sugar for a compound property "-machine

setter for the property.

numa-test will now cover the new syntax, while other tests
still use -smp.

Paolo Bonzini 9176e800db keyval: introduce keyval_merge
This patch introduces a function that merges two keyval-produced
(or keyval-like) QDicts. It can be used to emulate the behavior of
.merge_lists = true QemuOpts groups, merging -readconfig sections and
command-line options in a single QDict, and also to implement -set.

Stefan Hajnoczi 0f08586c71 util/async: add a human-readable name to BHs for debugging
It can be difficult to debug issues with BHs in production environments.
Although BHs can usually be identified by looking up their ->cb()
function pointer, this requires debug information for the program. It is
also not possible to print human-readable diagnostics about BHs because
they have no identifier.

This patch adds a name to each BH. The name is not unique per instance
but differentiates between cb() functions, which is usually enough. It's
done by changing aio_bh_new() and friends to macros that stringify cb.

The next patch will use the name field when reporting leaked BHs.

Daniel P. Berrangé bf783261f0 block/ssh: add support for sha256 host key fingerprints
Currently the SSH block driver supports MD5 and SHA1 for host key
fingerprints. This is a cryptographically sensitive operation and
so these hash algorithms are inadequate by modern standards. This
adds support for SHA256 which has been supported in libssh since
the 0.8.1 release.

Alberto Garcia ecd30d2d97 block: Allow changing bs->file on reopen
When the x-blockdev-reopen was added it allowed reconfiguring the
graph by replacing backing files, but changing the 'file' option was
forbidden. Because of this restriction some operations are not
possible, notably inserting and removing block filters.

This patch adds support for replacing the 'file' option. This is
similar to replacing the backing file and the user is likewise
responsible for the correctness of the resulting graph, otherwise this
can lead to data corruption.

Move supports_backing check of bdrv_reopen_parse_backing to called
(through bdrv_set_backing_noperm()) bdrv_set_file_or_backing_noperm()

Max Reitz d5b2399458 block: BDRV_O_NO_IO for backing file on creation
When creating an image file with a backing file, we generally try to
open the backing file (unless -u was specified), mostly to verify that
it is there, but also to get the file size if none was specified for the
new image.

For neither of these things do we need data I/O, and so we can pass
BDRV_O_NO_IO when opening the backing file. This allows us to open even
encrypted backing images without requiring the user to provide a secret.

This makes the -u switch in iotests 189 and 198 unnecessary (and the
$size parameter), so drop it, because this way we get regression tests
for this patch here.

Paolo Bonzini 5f50be9b58 async: the main AioContext is only "current" if under the BQL
If we want to wake up a coroutine from a worker thread, aio_co_wake()
currently does not work. In that scenario, aio_co_wake() calls
aio_co_enter(), but there is no current AioContext and therefore
qemu_get_current_aio_context() returns the main thread. aio_co_wake()
then attempts to call aio_context_acquire() instead of going through
aio_co_schedule().

The default case of qemu_get_current_aio_context() was added to cover
synchronous I/O started from the vCPU thread, but the main and vCPU
threads are quite different. The main thread is an I/O thread itself,
only running a more complicated event loop; the vCPU thread instead
is essentially a worker thread that occasionally calls
qemu_mutex_lock_iothread(). It is only in those critical sections
that it acts as if it were the home thread of the main AioContext.

Therefore, this patch detaches qemu_get_current_aio_context() from
iothreads, which is a useless complication. The AioContext pointer
is stored directly in the thread-local variable, including for the
main loop. Worker threads (including vCPU threads) optionally behave
as temporary home threads if they have taken the big QEMU lock,
but if that is not the case they will always schedule coroutines
on remote threads via aio_co_schedule().

With this change, the stub qemu_mutex_iothread_locked() must be changed
from true to false. The previous value of true was needed because the
main thread did not have an AioContext in the thread-local variable,
but now it does have one.

Philippe Mathieu-Daudé a2cd86a94a hw/audio/sb16: Avoid assertion by restricting I/O sampling rate range
While the SB16 seems to work up to 48000 Hz, the "Sound Blaster Series
Hardware Programming Guide" limit the sampling range from 4000 Hz to
44100 Hz (Section 3-9, 3-10: Digitized Sound I/O Programming, tables
3-2 and 3-3).

Later, section 6-15 (DSP Commands) is more specific regarding the 41h /
42h registers (Set digitized sound output sampling rate):

Valid sampling rates range from 5000 to 45000 Hz inclusive.

There is no comment regarding error handling if the register is filled
with an out-of-range value. (See also section 3-28 "8-bit or 16-bit
Auto-initialize Transfer"). Assume limits are enforced in hardware.

Alex Bennée 31fa83bd2b tests/tcg/configure.sh: tweak quoting of target_compiler
If you configure the host compiler with a multi-command stanza like:

  --cc="ccache gcc"

then the configure.sh machinery falls over with confusion. Work around
this by ensuring we correctly quote so where we need a complete
evaluation we get it. Of course the has() check needs single variable
so we need to unquote that. This does mean it essentially checks that
just the ccache command exits but if we got past that step we still
check the compiler actually does something.

Vladimir Sementsov-Ogievskiy 30ebb9aa92 block: improve permission conflict error message
Now permissions are updated as follows:
 1. do graph modifications ignoring permissions
 2. do permission update

(of course, we rollback [1] if [2] fails)

So, on stage [2] we can't say which users are "old" and which are
"new" and exist only since [1]. And current error message is a bit
outdated. Let's improve it, to make everything clean.

While being here, add also a comment and some good assertions.

We have different types of parents: block nodes, block backends and
jobs. So, it makes sense to specify type together with name.

Next, this handler us used to compose an error message about permission
conflict. And permission conflict occurs in a specific place of block
graph. We shouldn't report name of parent device (as it refers another
place in block graph), but exactly and only the name of the node. So,
use bdrv_get_node_name() directly.

John Snow 6b9c277797 gitlab: add python linters to CI
Add a Python container that has just enough juice for us to run the
Python code quality analysis tools. Base this container on Fedora,
because Fedora has very convenient packaging for testing multiple Python
versions.

We need python3, pip (for pulling packages), pipenv and virtualenv for
creating virtual environments, and tox for running tests. make is needed
for running 'make check-tox' and 'make venv-check' targets. Python3.10
is needed explicitly because the tox package only pulls in 3.6-3.9, but
we wish to test the forthcoming release of Python as well to help
predict any problems. Lastly, we need gcc to compile PyPI packages that
may not have a binary distribution available.

Add two tests:

check-python-pipenv uses pipenv to test a frozen, very explicit set of
packages against our minimum supported python version, Python 3.6. This
test is not allowed to fail. The dependencies this test uses do not
change unless python/Pipfile.lock is changed.

check-python-tox uses tox to install the latest versions of required
python dependencies against a wide array of Python versions from 3.6 to
3.9, even including the yet-to-be-released Python 3.10. This test is
allowed to fail with a warning.

John Snow beb6b57b3b python: create qemu packages
move python/qemu/*.py to python/qemu/[machine, qmp, utils]/*.py and
update import directives across the tree.

This is done to create a PEP420 namespace package, in which we may
create subpackages. To do this, the namespace directory ("qemu") should
not have any modules in it. Those files will go into new 'machine',
'qmp' and 'utils' subpackages instead.

Implement machine/__init__.py making the top-level classes and functions
from its various modules available directly inside the package. Change
qmp.py to qmp/__init__.py similarly, such that all of the useful QMP
library classes are available directly from "qemu.qmp" instead of
"qemu.qmp.qmp".
